NHTSA investigates air bags that cut driver’s ear

Federal regulators will conduct an investigation into a report the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration received last month about a side-curtain air bag that cut a driver’s ear in half.

The driver wrote a complaint to the administration after he says a metal bracket hit the side of his head when the airbag deployed during an accident. Had the bracket hit a few inches lower, or if he were a few inches taller, it could have caused serious injuries to his neck.

The accident took place in a 2012 Hyundai Elantra. Hyundai says it has not received any other complaints about its air bags.
