Thousands of Wisconsin drivers required to have ignition interlocks

In the year since Wisconsin passed its new drunk driving penalties, nearly 10,000 ignition interlocks were issued. The law stipulates that repeat OWI offenders or first-time offenders with a blood alcohol content of 0.15 or higher must have an ignition interlock installed in their car. Milwaukee County has the highest numbers of the device installed.

Law enforcement is startled by the numbers, but believes that it shows the law is working to prevent repeat offenders from driving drunk again. Officers note that between 10pm and 2am, two out of four drivers are driving while intoxicated.
