Traffic deaths below 600 in 2011

Posted on Wednesday, January 4th, 2012 at 4:30 pm

For the fourth consecutive year, less than 600 people died on Wisconsin roadways.

Last year, 569 people lost their lives on Wisconsin roads, 59 fewer than the five-year average but seven more than in 2010. The last time the state had fewer than 600 highway deaths for four years in a row was in 1924-1927.

According to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, motorcycle deaths dropped 18 percent from 2010, from 103 to 85 fatalities. Unfortunately, pedestrian and vehicular deaths increased. The director of the DOT’s Bureau of Transportation Safety said that there is no specific trend that accounted for the decrease in traffic deaths and that most fatal crashes were a result of poor driving habits and reckless decisions.
