A new study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reveals that hybrid vehicles are safer than conventional cars of the same models, despite common misconceptions.

Many people believe that hybrid cars are less safe because they are smaller and lighter. However, batteries in hybrid vehicles are so heavy that the entire car weighs on average 10% more than conventional cars. This extra weight makes hybrid passengers 25% less likely to be injured in a car accident.

However, hybrid cars are 20% more likely to be involved with pedestrian accidents because they are so quiet. The Department of Transportation is working on a way to make them louder so people can hear them coming.
