Honda investigating airbag malfunction

Posted on Tuesday, October 25th, 2011 at 4:45 pm

Nearly a dozen complaints have been filed of airbags deploying for no apparent reason in 2008 Honda Accords.

The most recent case involved a 26 year-old Georgia man who was driving 60-65 mph in the middle lane on Interstate 85 when his side airbags exploded. His Honda shows no sign of side impact. The man said the airbags blocked his view and he lost his hearing for a day.

Currently, neither Honda nor the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is not issuing a recall for this apparent defect. They state they cannot find a common link between the different instances of random airbag deployment. No accidents or fatalities have been linked to the dozen complaints listed on the federal website safecar.gov

State senator arrested for DWI

Posted on Tuesday, October 18th, 2011 at 3:39 pm

Former Wisconsin state senator, Randy Hopper, was arrested over the weekend for driving while intoxicated.

Hopper was pulled over after police received a phone call from a concerned motorist who claimed his black Suburban was swerving across Highway 151. The 45 year-old Republican politician was with his 26 year-old girl friend at the time. He refused to take a breath test on the scene and then failed administered field sobriety tests.

At the Fond du Lac County Jail, Hopper’s blood alcohol content was determined to be over 0.08 from a preliminary breath test. His exact BAC was not released. This is Hopper’s first drunk driving offense and could possibly lose his license or have to pay a fine.

Drunk driver pleads guilty

Posted on Tuesday, October 11th, 2011 at 4:13 pm

A 30 year-old Wisconsin drunk driver has plead guilty to causing a fatal accident over the summer. The man was driving between 50 to 70 mph when he rear-ended a pickup truck with four people inside.

He admitted to drinking approximately eight pitchers of beer and  drinking whiskey since noon. His blood alcohol level was 0.30, more than three times over the legal limit, at the time of the accident. The passenger of the truck, a 23 year-old man, was ejected from the vehicle and died from his injuries. The driver and two other people were injured.

The drunk driver has four previous drunk driving misdemeanors. Prosecutors have suggested a 30 year prison sentence with ten years suspended for his guilty plea.

Car-deer accidents on the decline

Posted on Wednesday, October 5th, 2011 at 7:48 pm

According to a new study by Statefarm, car-deer crashes have slightly declined across the country. However, Wisconsin still ranks seventh in the country for car versus deer accidents. Compared to last year, Wisconsin is down by 1% despite a reported 37 car-deer collisions in September.

The Statefarm study shows that Wisconsin drivers have a one in 97 chance of hitting a deer. The Lincoln County Sheriff suggests that the safest option for drivers, as hard as it may be, is to hit the animal rather than swerve out of the way. Trying to evade hitting the deer can result in more serious injuries.

Law enforcement encourages drivers to use their brights at night and to keep an eye on roadside ditches. Statefarm claims that October is the second most dangerous month for car-deer accidents, behind November.
